How we met

A former DI basketball player, Annie played nearly every sport growing up - except golf. During the pandemic, with basketball gyms closed and tennis courts locked up, Annie decided to take up the sport, spending evenings at Montclair Driving Range and taking lessons from the pros at Olympic Club.

John, on the other hand, was raised on the golf course. Growing up in a family of golfers and basketball players, John played competitively for his high school team but struggled to find time to play as a trial lawyer and litigator. When the pandemic hit, John went from playing a few rounds a year to 50-60 rounds a year, jumping at the opportunities provided by a shift to remote work and a career change that allowed for a better work-life balance.

On Saturday, November 14th, 2020 (three months into Annie’s golf career), after he finished playing an early morning round of 18 at The Presidio, John signed up to play the par 3 Cliffs course at the Olympic Club. Annie also signed up for the 12:38 p.m. tee time on Cliffs with her basketball teammate, Michele. (Her husband Matt had to cancel at the last minute.) On the first tee box, Annie and Michele watched John’s powerful, athletic swing from the back tees and nervously glanced at one another. “Feel free to play ahead, we’re not very good,” Annie offered. John declined, and they played their first round of golf together.

Despite both being members of the Olympic Club for years and participating in Olympic Club Basketball Leagues, John and Annie’s paths had never crossed until the day they were paired together on the Cliffs course. As a couple, they continue to enjoy golfing together, as well as playing basketball, running, swimming, and walking their dog, Mabel. John and Annie look forward to a lifetime of play, adventure, teamwork, and even a little healthy competition.
